A Great Use of Flicker, 50 People See... is "...a program to blend Flickr images which share the same tags. No human is involved in choosing, positioning, or blending the images." Pretty neat. (side note: I am not a flicker fan, I find it horribly hard and cumbersome to use. Just my humble opinion.)

This has got to be one of the coolest uses of JavaScript I have ever seen. That must be quite a bit of time invested... A JS tree controll from the same guy... Looks like Geir Landro (with a funky o that I can't type... ;))

Has anyone else heard of this? Brett told me about it the other day and it seems that Ebay gives 25 $1000 prizes every day. Anyone have any experience? I mean, this just screams scam to me...

I cant quite remember where I found this, but it's quite cool for those who like visuals. Newsmap is built in flash using the google news api to visually display the headlines. The more importaint (or common I should say) the headline, the bigger its displayed. Good stuff. I beleive its got a coldfusion backend, although I am not sure.

Now this is science at its best if you ask me. Don't know if they really work, don't know if they're safe, but someone's using their noggin. Basically these contact lenses change color according to the wearer's blood sugar level. no pricks, nothing. You just get red eyes if you need some insulin. Very cool. Found at new scientist.

Has anyone else ever played this? I remember playing it on my old 386 back in the day. Well you can actually play it on a current computer, you can download it from dosgamesarchive.com. Its a strategy puzzle type game, and pretty cool considering it came out in 1990. And for those of you that are interested, my 386 had 32 mb of ram and if I remember correctly, 256 mb of harddrive space on 5 platters. Awesome.

Hmm... found an entry on ericd.net yesterday to blogshares. It is a fantasy share market based on blogs instead of companies. Its quite interesting, and very adictive. Althought the site seems to have quite a bit of problems (mostly due to traffic I assume) its still quite fun if you can get on. This blog is listed here. If you are wanting to get started, I defiantely recomend you buying my stock, cause Im going to do whatever I can to make my shares go up.

Some reports have started to trickle in this morning about Yahoo! mail apparently upping thier limit on their mailbox to 1GB. First noticed on battellemedia who mentions that he has seen figures lately that put Yahoo! mail at around 40% of all Yahoo! page views. All of this is obviously in response to Gmail. All I know is while the 1GB is awesome, this alone is not why I use gmail. The interface, the conversationalization (yup, its a word now) of the emails, the search of course. All of these things come together to make one very appealing package. Although I must say, while I used to use hotmail, and had a yahoo account at one time, yahoo does seem to be the one "other" account that people still seem to be using besides gmail. Some other links to the story: CIOL : News The Register PC Pro: News TechWorld OverClockers Club You get the idea...

I have used Ray Camdens forum app called Galleon to add forums to the CF Manager for SlideShowPro demo. You can go there and get all the info and answer you need, or just shoot the breeze. Tell a friend.

I thought it would be worth mentioning a few things about my CF Manager for SlideShowPro. Aside from being a great way to manage your albums and pictures in slideshowpro, and the great thing of handling all of the resizing of your images for you, there are some other parts that are equally great. For instance, there is a user management/login component that it uses that runs completely off of xml. Although the API isn't really documented at the moment it wouldn't take much to figure it out. It could also be easily decoupled from the Manager and used in other projects. This is one of the main reasons I made CF manager opensource. You are free to download it and adapt all or parts of it to your own needs. Already have a cms on your site and don't want your users to have to switch environments just for the slide show? You could disect it up and use the components you need in your own cms to get the job done. So what are you waiting for? Go and download it now.

Stephen Erat has a great write up of how to add technorati to your blog. As you can see I have tried it out and you can search technorati from my blog using the pod on the side there.

Joshuaink has been given several awards for their new design, and rightly so I say. See, I can see this kind of stuff in my head, but it never gets to paper (or web) that way... Great work.

Well its been a long time coming, and there is still more to go, but the first beta of the CF Manager for Todd Dominey's Slide Show Pro Flash Component has been released. You can download it from my docs page. Just remember, it is a beta. If and when you find a problem, let me know. You can get the installation instructions here. And you should really try out the CF Manager Demo. Hope you guys enjoy it.

One of the things that seems to come up on sitepoint.com is the ability to restrict file types for uploads. So here is a link for a way to do it in javascript. Just remember that like the author says, it is not foolproof, and you still need to do server side checking.

Most web designers know about the CSS Zen Garden. But if you're like me (and I know you all are), you hate to have to click through all of those designs. So try out the css zen garden shot for a quick css fix.

Anyone who reads this blog knows I like google. And anyone who knows me would know that I would never condone "hacking" google or anything like "hacking". Just ask the guys over at sitepoint.. That being said, I would never mind the opportunity to learn from how google does certain things. And so, here is an article on Hacking Google Print which describes how google does its thing. Its some good stuff, and great methods of doing things. Its at least worth a read.

Im going to be honest here, I have not yet looked at this site, and really dont plan to alot the time to. They call it a gift to the coldfusion community and it is just that. Want to develop in coldfusion for little to nothing? Get ACME- Apache, coldfusion mx 7, mysql and eclipse, everything you need besides the computer and three ways to get the article to show you how to set it all up. Great stuff, thanks guys.

I dont think I have already posted this, although I should have. google is good, but I don't know if they ever are going to take over IMDB when it comes to movie information. But thats not going to stop them from trying now is it? As reported on google's blog google now has the ability to use the movie: operator, to search just about anything you want about a movie. Give it a spin: movie: office space.

Bill Bercik has posted a Guide to Using XMLHttpRequest (with baby steps). If you are interested in the not new, but suddenly revolutionary method of getting information without reloading a page, you might want to have a look. I think the article is geared towards php, but It probably wouldnt take much to adapt it to any language.

This just in (well, it was just in last week sometime, but its just now in on my blog ;) ), you can now customize your google news. Just go to news.google.com and youll see the customize links. Cool part about it to me is theyre just using a cookie to do it all. At least I am assuming they are since you don't have to log in to do it.

Ive been meaning to post this for a while now, but just now getting around to it. The other day I was getting some bad errors in DWMX 2004. Every time I tried to open a file or save a file I would get these alert errors that pretty much hindered my abiltiy to get anything done, at least not quickly anyway. Things still *worked*, files were saved and opened, but not without these mutlitple errors. Well I called macromedia support, and finally got through to a guy who sounded like he could help. He told me that he would send me an email with instructions on how to rebuild the configuration files (which he said had obviously become corrupted). So great, I should be back in business before the end of the day. Nope. No email ever came. So I went to google and finally found this page: http://www.forum4designers.com/archive12-2004-6-59172.html which told me how to recreate the configuration without having to reinstall the program. Either way, now its working fine, but im looking more and more at cfeclipse...

something new from the google camp this morning. Oftentimes I just want to know how cold it is going to get at night, or if its going to rain today. Well now google helps me do this. You can go to just www.google.com and just type weather: city, state or just weather: zipcode and it will bring up a small forcast for you with the current weather conditions. Pretty nice. Currently in Collierville....

Is anyone else having problems with google maps and firefox? When viewing any map in firefox it leaves many of the squares blank. I recently downloaded the netscape 8.0 beta and so decided to try it in that. It works perfectly, beautifully in it. But thats when using the msie 6.0 titan rendering engine. Switch it to "netscape" which is firefox's rendering engine, I get the same blank squares. Any one else notice this?

Now if I can ever get someone to read this that knows what theyre talking about and uses OOP in their web apps then Ill be doing good. Here's my deal. I understand OOP. Okay guys, let me rephrase that, I understand the concepts of OOP, I understand its reasoning behind it, I understand about beans and data access objects, and objects, polymorphism, inheritance, all that. What I don't understand is how that applies to basic web applications. For instance a Content Management System. Let me explain my misunderstandings. continue reading...

I have created a standalone cf app for managing the photos and xml in Todd Dominey's SlideShowPro. It's coming along nicely. If you want to check out the demo, you can see it at http://www.ryanguill.com/cfssp/. I still have some IE specific bugs to work out, so you may want to make sure you use firefox to check it out for now. After I get those little things worked out, and add a couple more features it will be time to write the faq's and help files. I welcome any feedback, so let me know what you think.

Well, its finally ready for some clinical tests. the netscape 8.0 beta has been released. This should be interesting for many reasons. 1. You are able to pick between msie's (6.0 i assume) or firefox 1.0's rendering engine for the painting of the website. Actually, you can choose on a site by site basis which it uses. This is an interesting feature to say the least. 2. Its going to really start the browser wars again. To me, its going to be almost like pitting netscape against ie in some ways, yet using ie's rendering engine against it. I've downloaded it and trying it out. Its been about 15 minutes so far, but not without problems. I may just be doing it wrong though, so im going to try it out for the next few days and hopefully write up my experiences soon. I also am going to do some tests on what the user agent is thats being sent to the site using the different rendering engines. Friends and family, probably dont want to try it out just yet, fellow workers and developers, I would start giving it a spin to see what were going to have to deal with. UPDATE: Looks like they have done it right with the user agents, although there was a surprise. When using the firefox rendering engine it passes the useragent value of: HTTP_USER_AGENT Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20050302 Firefox/0.9.6 so they arent using the 1.0 rendering engine, theyre actually using 0.9.6. Now I don't know, the rendering engine back then may be the same as now, but I would hope that they are going to upgrade along with firefox. And when using the ie rendering engine it passes the useragent value of : HTTP_USER_AGENT Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322) What is also interesting is when doing domain specific switching of the rendering engines, it gives you the option between internet explorer and netscape, not firefox. I am interested in finding out if this is going to be a good thing for firefox or a bad thing.
